SYRACUSE Sacred Harp
A b o u t u s
The second Sunday of every month, singers from the community surrounding Syracuse, New York, get together to sing four-part acapella anthems and hymns. We meet in a community-friendly location, share food and song, and depart to meet again the following month. There are no rehearsals, no audience, and no concerts. Just singing and fellowship!
Our community is comprised of members from various backgrounds -- both religious and secular -- and from many singing levels -- both beginner and experienced. Come join us!
Our song book, called The Sacred Harp, is one of many books in the shape-note singing tradition. Notes are represented by several different shapes, aiding the singer in recognizing the intervals and notes without needing formal music training.
Sacred Harp singing is an American tradition, coming from 18th-century singing schools, designed to teach the general public how to sing and enjoy music together.
